Physical perimeter protection is best explained as systems and technologies designed to protect people and assets within a defined area by preventing unauthorised physical intrusions. The primary defence is the perimeter boundary with four goals: to deter, delay, and detect unwanted intrusion whilst simultaneously enabling controlled access for authorised parties. Previously only used in military facilities, critical infrastructure and other high-risk sites, perimeter security solutions are now common both in commercial and residential sites, transport depots, and many other urban and remote locations. Although, the most stringent requirements are still concentrated in the high security locations.

An effective perimeter protection solution is a solution that fits the security and safety needs of the customer. It is a combination of demarcation, entrance control and perimeter intruder detection system. Other technologies and products may be added to the overall solution to increase its effectiveness.
